Tension and Relief

Kevin Cook

1988, 11:00 minutes, colour, English

TAPECODE 380.05

In five segments, this videotape examines certain facets of urban living. "Todd" and "Mary" are video portraits of two unsettled young Canadians, one of whom lives in New York City; the other resides in Montreal. "Architecture Galdre" is a visual survey of architecture and the spaces created by it, the setting for all urban activities. "Garbage" is a reminder that the incessant proliferation of ecologically incompatible waste products is an integral component of our lifestyles. "Relief" comments on the idea of relief as a human need in the same way that a TV advertisement might.
Each of the five segments could be seen as a self-contained work possessing characteristics of both video essays and rock video clips. Like journalistic productions, this tape attempts to seduce the viewer with simplistic information and provocative, colorful images.
