Hygiene

Jorge Lozano and Andrew J. Paterson

1985, 42:00 minutes, B&W, English

TAPECODE 810.00

The melodrama is interrupted by dispatches from an "objective" world outside of the principal characters. Hygiene is visualized in terms of both prime-time soap operas and the Sirkian/Fassbinderian melodrama. But the melodramatic formula is deconstructed by the juxtaposition of the heroine and provocative external information. Alternatively the tape builds emotional sympathy for the protagonist and then counteracts this sympathy by framing her in the social contexts she has selected for herself.
