Je Suis Blue: Like a Cloud in the Sky

Je Suis Blue: Like a Cloud in the Sky is a 6 minute video self-portrait. Hemmerick states that he has been interested in the concept of objectifying the subject. His visual art works have included using photographs of his body, through collage, against appropriated images from the National Geographic. This is a political reaction to the National Geographic's long standing history of curiosity, voyeurism and appropriation of images of people of colour and depicting these people as savages and primitives; and as objects of Euro-centric speculations of superiority.
Hemmerick states that after reading Leonard Slain's Art and Physics: Parallel Visions in Space, Time and Light, (William Morrow & Company, 1991)he discovered "as societies advanced and added to their vocabularies, the works for colour followed the spectrum of visible light from red to blue. Only in the most mature languages, belonging to the most sophisticated civilizations, does a separate word for the colour blue make an appearance, and usually does it so, very late in the culture's development." Hemmerick says, "As I am entering middle-age, I thought the colour blue an appropriate colour of self-reflection and description."
