This twenty eight minute documentary traces the process of a modern dancer who studies Classical East Indian Dance with Priyamvada Sankar, legacy of the legendary Balasaraswati. Through sharing the modern dancer's learning process, the audience is guided into an understanding and appreciation of Bharata Natyam Dance.
Bharata Natyam dance originated thousands of years ago. Bharata refers to an ancient sage who made the basic rules of this dance. The word Natyam means dance. This dance originated with the legends of Shiva and Parvati. According to this tradition, the entire world is a dance with Lord Nataraja, Deity of Dance, conducting the universe. The Divine origin of this dance is described by ancient Sanskrit texts as being "born of the same womb as Supreme Happiness."
While colourful visuals portray the dance and music of Bharata Natyam, the voice over narrative traces the process of a modern dancer who studies Bharata Natyam Dance in order to allow the audience to be gently transported into the rich history and tradition of this ancient art.
