Double Reflecting Pool

1996, English

TAPECODE 10121

Double Reflecting Pool is an interactive monument designed to replace the Mall in Washington, D.C. Double Reflecting Pool takes the form of a drag strip. It is a monument to elapsed time, Double Reflecting Pool is a monument that is always becoming.
The user gets to drive a 1929 Ford Model A closed-cab pickup in a drag race against a shadowy opponent driving a very similar blue pickup. The drag race is actually more a test of reflexes than a test of driving skill. As a result, The Double Reflecting Pool memorializes the central nervous system of the current driver.
As always in Fred Truck's works, Perspective and 3D imagery is of paramount importance. Here, the perspective studied is perspective in motion--that is, from the point of view of a dragster pilot, or a freeway driver.
Additional features of Double Reflecting Pool include the Burnout ritual, which creates fountains in The Reflecting Pool, and the Walkaround, in which you, as driver, walk around your car and check it out.
