L.A. Flex

Colin Campbell

1980, 20:00 minutes, colour, English

TAPECODE 020.34

An exploration into the mysterious and miraculou lives of artists in the downtown Los Angeles art scene. Artist and critic Mike Hoolboom writes:

“Set in the broiling micro bubble of LA’s downtown art scene, L.A. Flex (in which Colin Campbell plays himself, sans drag!) sends the artist into the heart of the matter, hobnobbing with the finery until he seeks escape with Tony, an artist’s model. Looking for love in all the right places. Inserted between his large small talk are life drawing sessions gone wrong, an unidentified phone caller (“Where were you tonight? You know who this is…") and a long phone monologue by a woman who has begun to bleed spontaneously a la Jesus. In this episodic tape, mostly delivered in master shots, Campbell explores the place between the body and its observer, in a nomadic graze through west coast wildlife.”
