Don't Be Thrown Off By Those Who Reel In Horror

Printation is the subtitle for this unique and unusual animated short. This graphically colourful film is a combination of the artist’s own dream images; many of the film’s images were actual etchings of Martin’s work. Those etchings and lithographs were then animated into a film short using nontraditional approaches to many mediums (i.e. colour copies, monoprints, drawings and prints). The graphic storyline was inspired by the study of Plato’s The Republic, using the cave as a metaphor for the mysterious and strange landscapes of the film. The soundtrack helps to direct viewers to visually walk through the abstract landscapes.

Each animated cell was created by hand by the artist using a turn of the century printing press, among other methods, to make each etching landscape come to life. This cell animation project was the synchronization of two crafts, printmaking and cell animation.

The title is taken from a poem written by Martin and used for the box-cover graphics for the film.
