Su Rynard

1997, 22:00 minutes, colour, English

In this work, a more traditional dramatic form is brought into play, with clever dialogue and revealing body language. There are "characters" developed, for an oblique probing of their intentions and responses. This Helen, a young doctor in her laboratory, is attractive, bright and pleasant, though she has little interest in her colleagues or in social interaction. The others laugh together, go out for dinner; she stays behind to test her theories. One night, after hours - voilà! - she conjures a smiling new person form her watery tank, cloned from a strand of hair.

In Strands, Su Rynard has created characters and a story to probe issues of interest and concern to her not unlike the scientist Helen who duplicated elements of herself, partly just to prove she could, and also to see what would happen.
