I lived in Amsterdam from January to July 1998 and I was fascinated and frustrated by the resistance I encountered when I tried to learn Dutch. Why do people prefer to have a window that they can sometimes slide closed?
I began to take a video camera out at night and peek into hundreds of other people's windows. I wasn't quite sure why I was doing this.
It was a long while before these separate trains of thought became connected; the final piece evolved gradually over the following year.
