TWO DOLLAR PORTRAITS: 1999, 1:28
An eight hour performance during which I commissioned twenty portraits of me from strangers. I become the passive subject while the passerby is asked to function as the artist.

DRAWING IN, STUDENT SPACE: 2000,3:26
A performance by Will Kwan and the student artists of the University of Toronto at Scarborough, 2000, 3 day public drawing event.

On the occasion of initial planning for the construction of a new student building at the University of Toronto campus at Scarborough, students were invited to draw their idea of the perfect student space in my temporary, ad hoc, public studio. The three day event yielded 80 drawings, that were then reproduced in an unlimited edition artist's book/petition and presented to the university administration. Ideas from the drawings have since been integrated into the architect's plans for a building slated to open in the fall of 2004.

BLINDLY THROUGH THIS ARCHIPELAGO: 2001, 3:49
I am drawing an empty map of the world from memory. Tell me about your local experience of a place: the town you grew up in, a city or village you've visited, a summit you've scaled, a river you've swam in, a sea you've sailed through, a shore you've sat on, which you or I can add to this drawing. Your contribution will turn this abstract map into a visual account of how people move through the world - how elsewhere is intricately linked to here.

UNTITLED, ANONYMOUS, SILENT (5 hour performance): 2001, 2:00
Performance in Trinity Bellwoods Park (Toronto) as part of Shut Up (Toronto-Chicago Performance Exchange) event comprised of six performers from Chicago and six from Toronto. Presented by FADO Performance Art Inc. Untitled, Anonymous, Silent is an attempt to link the silent gestures of mime performance to 'silent' displays of state power as exhibited through a popular form punishment known as community service, in this case, maintenance work. The performer in this piece rehearses simultaneously various functions of the artist in society: as performer, worker, criminal and clown.

HINTERGRÜND (AFAR) (2 hour performance): 2001, 1:46
The wave is a poetic double gesture, capturing in its spare event expressions of departure and arrival, distance and proximity, the tragic and the tragi-comedic, the attempt to communicate and the attempt to sever communication.

OUT THE WINDOW, DOWN TO THE STREET (3 hour performance): 2002, 2:15
The street tells me what to do. All I want to do is get down to the street.

DON'T TOE THE LINE, OR TOE YOUR OWN LINE (HURON): 2002, 5:30
Street intervention produced at the corner of College and Huron in Toronto. This street painting is an attempt to delineate a temporary space of play and performance within the official lines of the city.
