Les Petites morts presents a series of brief portraits of women screaming, all taken from horror films. These short vignettes ar e rhythmic and punctuated by moments of black. Les Petites morts is the second installment of a video trilogy, entitled Les Documents, that use segments of footage appropriated from film and television to explore associations, implications and semiotics relating to a common cinematic gesture. The work activates our existing relationship with the moving picture in entertainment and amplifies the populist recognition of stereotypical situations and roles inhabited by females. Characterized by heavy manipulation and drastic reframing, the images and accompanying soundscape, articulate an atmosphere of anxiety and destabilization – serving to create a new encounter with our memory and expectations of the filmic genres.

Les Petites morts présente une centaine de portraits de femmes en train de crier, tous extraits de films d’horreur. Ces courtes vignettes sont cadencées et ponctuées par des instants noirs. Les Petites morts est la deuxième partie d’une trilogie vidéographique, intitulée Les Documents, qui utilise des images empruntées au cinéma et la télévision pour explorer des associations, implications et sémiotiques relatant à un geste cinématographique commun. L’oeuvre déclenche nos relations existantes aux images de l’industrie du spectacle et amplifie les rôles stereotypés des femmes. Par la pratique du montage, la manipulation numérique, et la répétition le récit est interrompu pour souligner les contructions idéologiques constitutives du cinema populaire. Accompagnée d’une trame sonore sombre soigneusement manipuler et reconstruite, cette oeuvre produit un atmosphère d’inquiétude et de déstabilité afin d’offrir une nouvelle rencontre entre notre mémoire et nos attentes du genre filmique.
