The use of fictive self-portraiture and doppelganger selves has been an important element of our work. Our presence within the work has always been a performed presence; using doppelgangers has been a way to speak through multiple personae. Creating and inhabiting these shifting personae, has allowed us the freedom to explore aspects of contemporary culture – such as consumerism, the cult of celebrity, political agency and disenfranchisement - without the restrictions of a singular, authoritative voice. In the ‘Glitter Desert Island’ series of photographs, sculptural installations and videos (2005 - 2007) we assumed the pose and gaze of the rarefied dandy, reclining on a gold glitter desert island complete with fake palm trees. We appear cast adrift and disengaged from the everyday world of humdrum experience, work and politics. Whilst seemingly luxuriating in isolated splendour we are, in fact, trapped in an absurd and somewhat Beckettian situation that renders us inert, speechless and blank.
