“Canadian Klein”, “Hide” and “Highway” constitute a series of short performance-for-videos that examine the female form as problematic gendered site. In each work we find a female figure attempting to meld into her natural setting, and thus playing into the trope that femininity is intrinsically tied to and at home in nature. Challenging this notion, a violent undercurrent is palpable. This is witnessed in the endurance of pain—in pushing through, in bearing, and in resisting the elements—with an exposed naked body and bare feet. There is also the potential for a double reading. For example, in “Hide” woman can be both hiding from view and be an active hunter concealed within a hide. The potential for multiple interpretations brings about an uncomfortable awareness, implicating the viewer in a kind of staged and theatrical voyeurism.
