In 2010, The Office for the Unknown opened for a week at Blaak 10 on Witte de Withstraat, the cultural stretch in Rotterdam. Office plants were purchased, a Xerox machine was made available, various projects were initiated by members of the group, and I composited Smooth Transitions for the basement, amidst the refuse of packaging and extension cords.
Incorporating language from the service industry, the digital images are set in motion against a soundtrack taken from promotional videos of industrial baking machines. Colour palette, words, and icons are recycled like stale air. Smooth Transitions pits the corporate rhetoric of progression against cyclic catchphrases and rhythmic quips for a sense of motion-sick optimism.
