Just Like You Do

Just like you do is a written poem, As a Deaf artist and as an artist involved in cultivating a community I reached out to some of my Deaf friends in order to realize this project. The goal of the work is to use sign language in order to articulate the struggles we as deaf individuals face, and in turn to allow viewers to relate and empathize with Deaf people, highlighting the humanness that we all posses. As Deaf people we are constantly asked to explain, and through having to explain ourselves have to convince ourselves and others of our important role in society. The work aims to look at how these individual and group struggles intersect with each-other and how these things affect Deaf people in their daily lives. Through the project I want to present and capture the beauty of sign language and show how powerful a tool for communication it is.
