This performance for the camera is part of larger project entitled Maria Plus One that lasted from 2005 to 2008. The series of photographs, videos, live performances and interventions depicted the artist enacting various romantic rituals with a life size doll. This work shows the artist dancing with her male doll to the same song over the course of several days. The famous French son by Françoise Hardy (Tous les garçons et les filles de mon age) laments loneliness and the unfulfilled desire for a romantic partner. The use of this song apply emphasizes the profound loneliness that motivated the Maria Plus One project. The fact that the artist sings off key, sometimes desperately, above the original track emphasizes the angst in the lyrics and her dance. Despite the artist’s upbeat dance moves, we can’t escape the fact that these romantic moments are uncannily lived with an inanimate object. Even though this project is humorous and appears to be saccharine sweet and light hearted at first glance, it raises important questions about loneliness, otherness, conformity, gender roles and the institutions of love and marriage.
