Landscape Study V [cheering for what?] is a 2-channel video that combines a series of three performance for videos. Dressed in red shorts, tank top, high socks, white shoes, and wearing complementary red nail polish with a set of pom poms in hand, Jordyn Stewart sports attire that merges both cheerleading and athleticism. The videos document a choreographed routine on the lawn of her parent’s backyard in Beamsville, Ontario, a familiar place for her childhood rehearsal of both dance and sport. Drawing from the visual language of drill teams and cheerleading, the choreography speaks to the ritualization of patriotism and nationalism embedded within her upbringing. Utilizing futility and humour the work questions the self-image that society has instilled in her childhood, informing my Canadian identity. Caught in a contemplative perpetual loop the work questions modes of devotion, dedication, obligation and commitment.
